Quotes from the Media:
“ An amazing Shakuhachi player Marco Lienhard has come out with a new CD, truly a very gifted and wonderful sense of musicality. Not since “ National Treasure” Yamaguchi Goro’s rendition of Kinko Honkyoku music have I felt the need to listen to more of his music. His rendition of Honkyoku form the Watazumi style is incredible and everyone studying the style should listen to it. His powerful and heartfelt rendition of Amazing grace reminded me of such gospel singers as Mahalia Jackson. ”

Taikoza concert:
Taikoza uses the powerful rhythms of the Taiko drums to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences in a new dimension of excitement. The Taiko is a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums-and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance. Drawing from Japan's rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates the shakuhachi, the fue (both bamboo flutes) and the Koto (a 13 string instrument). Taikoza’s new CD has been nominated as best Asian Ethnic Album for the Just Plain Folks Music Award. Taikoza has appeared on different TV pro grams such as Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, the History Channel in “History vs. Hollywood” and ESPN S.U.M.O: The battle of the Giants. Taikoza is featured in the Movie: The Commute.
Taikoza has recorded the music for the Nintendo wii game: Red Steel 1 and 2.
Taikoza and East Winds have been the recipients of many grants for their exciting and energetic programs.
Taikoza presents a very popular program for schools in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia and Virginia area for Young Audiences and Symphony Space. Taikoza did a tour of Birmingham, AL area schools funded with a NEA grant that the Birmingham International Festival received.
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world).
The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center and many others. They have performed in Russia, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, Republic of Georgia, etc.
What the media said:
Reviews for Marco Lienhard and his group Taikoza
“The shakuhachi, played with malleable, expressive attacks, produces a breathy sound, deep in terms of profundity if not pitch. “One can hear already in a single tone the sound of the whole cosmos,” Mr. Hosokawa writes, adding that the instrument evokes “the sadness and beauty of the past.” Marco Lienhard, a Swiss-born master of the shakuhachi, did ample justice to these suggestions.”
JAMES R. OESTREICH, New York Times
“In its choreography and its vigor taiko becomes almost a martial art, one in which violence has been sublimated into disciplined exultation a blend of high-decibel virtuosity and sinful shakuhachi solos. Precision and energy are paramount here and the product, for me, was medicinal. It is a combination narcotic, stimulant and vitamin pill.”
Bernard Holland, NY Times
"The concert was full of stirring Music from Japan. From the most delicate and mournful bamboo flute song to the loudest and most pulsating beat, the dedicated passion of the musicians was inspiring."
The Richmond News Leader
Taikoza has moved the drums in the foreground and into an exciting visual Explosion.
The Dothan Eagle
“ Few adjectives can explain the sound, emotion and overall experience of the pounding drums of a live performance. My senses were rattles.”
Nichi Bei, Times
“Something strange and wonderful is coming your way. There was thunder and there was lighting and there was the sea crashing against a cliff, and volcanoes. For a few utterly transporting minutes, there was expressed in the metaphors of merciless rhythms and fluttering melodies, anything a listener had experienced, would experience and could imagine experiencing.”
ERIC HUBLER, WASHINGTON POST
"Taikoza is the definition of great art and the audience was not mistaken when they broke into thunderous applause."
FAN of Neuchatel
The performance physical at times, meditative at times was very powerful and emotional. The visual beauty as well as the raw energy of the drummers pounding on the taiko took the audience. It created an emotional tension that was only released at the end with the audience’s heartfelt and thunderous applause. The members of Taikoza beyond their professionalism were able to make Taiko music more approachable to the audience.
Corriere del Ticino
“An amazing shakuhachi player Marco Lienhard has come out with a new CD, truly a very gifted and wonderful sense of musicality. Not since Yamaguchi Goro’s rendition of Kinko Honkyoku music have I felt the need to listen to more of his music. His rendition of Honkyoku form the Watazumi School is incredible and everyone studying the style should listen to it. His powerful and heartfelt rendition of Amazing grace reminded me of such gospel singers as Mahalia Jackson."
From article by Mr. Kishi appeared in Hogaku Journal,
Tokyo Japan
“The members gave their bodies over to musical performance at times a very physical and musical performance. - The highly appreciative audience was treated to physical dexterity, lovely and magical flute music.”
Boston Herald
“ The drummers were clearly enduring some metaphysical test, but less grueling in the program, Marco Lienhard’s deeply fanciful solos on the shakuhachi looked fully invested and with more than just energy. It is the layering of drums patterns and sonorities in intricate compositions that represent the key to the experience.”
Los Angeles Times
“The musicians’ strong performance really livened up the audience Taikoza’s energetic performance is a delicate mixture of tranquility and excitement and while using traditional Japanese performing arts they are successful at breaking national boundaries.”

Quotes from the Media:
“ An amazing Shakuhachi player Marco Lienhard has truly a very gifted and wonderful sense of musicality. Not since “ National Treasure” Yamaguchi Goro’s rendition of Kinko Honkyoku music have I felt the need to listen to more of his music. His powerful and heartfelt rendition of Amazing Grace reminded me of such gospel singers as Mahalia Jackson. ” Hogaku Journal, Tokyo
“Marco Lienhard, a Swiss-born master of the shakuhachi played with malleable, expressive attacks, …deep in terms of profundity if not pitch. One can hear already in a single tone the sound of the whole cosmos, the sadness and beauty of the past.”
JAMES R. OESTREICH, New York Times

The 31st annual FOCUS! festival, Nippon Gendai Ongaku: Japanese Music Since 1945, opens with the New Juilliard Ensemble, conducted by Joel Sachs, on Friday, January 23, 2015, at 8 p.m., in Juilliard’sPeter Jay Sharp Theater in a program of pieces for chamber orchestra by Toshio Hosokawa, Akira Nishimura, Somei Satoh, Misato Mochizuki, and Michio Mamiya. The festival continues with four chamber music concerts, Monday, January 26, through Thursday, January 29, and closes with a concert by theJuilliard Orchestra, conducted by celebrated Japanese conductor Tadaaki Otaka, on Friday, January 30, 2015, at 8 p.m., also in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The January 30 program features a tribute to Tōru Takemitsu, the most renowned of Japanese composers, with works by Akira Miyoshi, Takashi Yoshimatsu, and Claude Debussy, whose music has had a tremendous influence on Japanese composers and particularly on Takemitsu.
All events are free, and tickets will be available beginning January 13, 2015 at events.juilliard.edu.
On programming this year’s FOCUS! festival, Joel Sachs remarked: “The idea of a festival of Japanese music was the natural result of my many years of performing music by some of the best known Japanese composers, beginning with a 1995 Continuum concert of music by Tōru Takemitsu and Toshiro Mayuzumi. Over the next decades, having performed music by Akira Nishimura, Toshio Hosokawa, Karen Tanaka, and others, I realized the riches available from Japanese composers. Seeing that Japanese composers wrote in all manners of style, I became confident that so much variety of Japanese music would prove rewarding to the New York audience and to Juilliard’s performers.”
Program Information:
The festival opens on Friday, January 23, 2015, at 8 p.m. in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater with the New Juilliard Ensemble, led by Joel Sachs, in a program featuring Toshio Hosokawa’s Voyage X – Nozarashi (2009, Western Hemisphere premiere) for shakuhachi and ensemble with guest artist Marco Lienhard on shakuhachi

The shakuhachi came to Japan from China in the seventh century. By the 13th century there was an offshoot of the Rinzai school called Fuke-shu, whose priests as their main meditative practice would play the shakuhachi. This was called suizen (blowing zen). There was a large repertoire of musical solo meditation pieces built up and these are collectively known as honkyoku. During this period only monks were allowed to play and the shakuhachi was considered a sacred instrument. Eventually it started to be heard at the court in Kyoto where a repertoire of ensemble pieces (sankyoku) was created, and after the dissolution of Fuke-shu during the Meiji era the ordinary people of Japan were able to use it for folksongs (Minyo) and western music. ”

Quotes from the Media:
“Something strange and wonderful is coming your way. There was thunder and there was lighting and there was the sea crashing against a cliff, and volcanoes. For a few utterly transporting minutes, there was expressed in the metaphors of merciless rhythms and fluttering melodies, anything a listener had experienced, would experience and could imagine experiencing.”
ERIC HUBLER, WASHINGTON POST
“ In its choreography and its vigor taiko becomes almost a martial art, one in which violence has been sublimated into disciplined exultation a blend of high-decibel virtuosity and sinful shakuhachi solos. Precision and energy are paramount here and the product, for me, was medicinal. It is a combination narcotic, stimulant and vitamin pill.”
Bernard Holland, NY Times

Workshop #1: 11/6 @ 5:30-7: 30PM
Yoko uchi/ Naname Taiko:
You will get to learn a new song that you will be able to perform on a slant stand (Naname) inspired from a Festival and from the style I developed with Ondekoza. Learn a slightly different style than the regular naname style and the philosophy behind it. After spending 20 years with Ondekoza and its director Mr. Den, I developed my own style and approach to taiko and its esthetic. A great way to learn a new song and get new ideas about taiko and learn about its inspiration and philosophy.
Workshop #2: 11/6 @7:30- 9:30pm
Kagura/ Kaitoryu, A taiko piece from the Shinto temple festival in Tobishima Mura, Aichi Prefecture of the Kaitoryu style. The late Tsukiboshi Sensei taught me this song while in Ondekoza and encouraged us to pass it along. This area around Nagoya is famous for this type of drumming that uses two drums (Shime in front of you and one nagado to your right side. You can make this song as challenging as you want, with adding more bachi twirls or do the simple version and learn the rhythms. This song is a great way to better your skills in playing Shime and Nagado. This song is played usually seated but can be played standing. This song can be learned by intermediate to advanced but some quick beginners can pick on the rhythm easily and try some of the movements. This song can be performed later on and is a great way to open up your way of playing and thinking about taiko and movement.
Added Kaitoryu Workshop #3
Workshop #3: 11/8 @7:30- 9:30pm
See Kagura/ Kaitoryu info

What is Kaitoryu? Kaitoryu is a temple piece (kagura) from the Nagoya Aichi prefecture area. It is played by several groups in the area and uses two drums, one shime and a nagado on the side. It is one of the few traditional pieces that uses two drums and stick twirls are done with the left hand. A great way to expand your taiko horizon. Tsukiboshi Sensei recreated this song for the Kaitoryu style in Tobishima Village after the typhoon destroyed the temple in the 50s. Tsukiboshi Sensei taught Marco and the other Ondekoza members the song so that it could expand to other parts of the world.

His rendition of Honkyoku form the Watazumi style is incredible and everyone studying the style should listen to it. His powerful and heartfelt rendition of Amazing grace reminded me of such gospel singers as Mahalia Jackson.
